Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST), a merger of the
former HUST (founded in 1953), Tongji Medical University (founded in
1907), Wuhan Urban Construction Institute (founded in 1954) and Wuhan
Vocational College of Science & Technology (founded in 1968), was
established on May 26, 2000. The University is one of leading
universities directly under the management of the Ministry of
Education.
36 academic schools and departments
cover eleven disciplines, specifically, philosophy, economics, law,
education, literature, history, agriculture, science, engineering,
medicine and management.
The University offers a variety of programs, including 74 undergraduate programs, 200 Master’s programs, 139 doctoral programs and 22 post-doctoral research centers.
The University has 4 National Leading Laboratories, 4 National
Engineering Research Centers, and 12 Leading Laboratories of
Ministerial and Provincial Level. 15 key subjects are national level
and 28 key subjects are ministerial and provincial level.
206 Research Units are conducting interdisciplinary research across a broad range of subject areas.
There are 10 full academicians and 5 part-time academicians of the
Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Full-time students number over 50,000. Of these, around 12,000 are
master candidates and about 4, 400 are doctoral candidates.
There are more than 19,000 part-time or adult students registered for degree, diploma and certificate courses.
The University has more than 10,000 faculty members, of whom over 4,000
are full time teachers. Nearly 800 people are full professors and 1,
200 are associate professors.
Research funds from various governmental departments and enterprises
amount to 527 million yuan in 2004, comparing with 450 million yuan in
2003.
The University Library has a collection of 3.49 million volumes.
Teaching, research and administrative buildings cover 743,800 square
meters; student dormitories cover an area of 554, 600 square meters.
The University has 3 standard modern sports grounds, 70 basketball
courts, 14 tennis courts, 2 gymnasia and 1 entertainment center.
The University has altogether 14 canteens and restaurants, 6 shopping
centers and 1 big market on campus. 6 banks have their branches and
China Post has also its branch here.
The University has three affiliated hospitals, namely, Tongji Hospital,
Union Hospital and Liyuan Hospital, where around 5,400 people are
employed.
The University has one affiliated Kindergarten and one affiliated High School.
