I
am back at the internet cafe near campus. We just got a break from
last cultural class and are to the medical hospital this afternoon.
Group dynamics are still good. The campus is very beautiful but it
sure could benefit from a street sweeper. No litter, just dusty and
needs to be washed.
We are getting along fine. The trip is giving Dr. Levine a lot of
unexpected surprises as scheduled items are being changed daily on
him. But everyone is going with the flow, once you are here what can
you really do.
I am starting about changing my paper topic from intrastructure
(e.g. water, sewer, garbage) to change management...as scheduled
instruction on this trip has been about change.
After the free day from our arrival in Wuhan, we did a campus
walking tour. The campus is a city in itself. Nearly one million
students on this campus. It is like a city within itself. The tour
went till nearly 6PM. Then we went shopping and I found some great
walking sandals for about $7USD. They are all that I am wearing now as
it is very hot and humid here in Wunan. We went to dinner that evening
at a hotel just off campus. Very good food and a great dinner. It was
mostly the MBA's that went out that night, plus another lady who is
an adult undergrad student.
Then yesterday, we had our Chinese language class of
introductions. I do not remember a thing, but I did at least learn to
say excuse me and thank you. From there we all went to lunch at a
chinese resturant and had a private room. Mark had the MBA
students facilitate a discussion session of impressions thus far and
how it might relate to the paper that they will be
writing. Conversation was lively but the room was so hot that everyone
was tired. From there we met with the Chinese management students.
They were sophmores and up. Very very enlightening and they are so
very disciplined. They take 11 courses versus 6 generally in the US.
From the campus we saw their library which is supported interestly enough by anheiser busch. Logos were everywhere.
Some of the students stayed with us the rest of the evening as we
went out to downtown Wuhan. We had dinner when I briefly emailed you
at a resturant called bon appetit. It was not french, but they did
serve french fries. They also had sandwiches if you would call it
that. The club sandwiches didn't even have any meat on them. I wanted
to order the vege of the day but they had sold out so I ended up with
curry asparagus and tomatoes on rice. It was fairly good.
We didn't get back to campus till after 10PM. I am sleeping the
night though. Today we went to the international student dining
commons and they had us make pot stickers. So it is breaking out to be
culture in the AM and business in the afternoons. Mark is a little
frustrated as we were to have lectures from the business professors in
the AM. But here you have to go with the flow as we are the visitors.
We can not upload pictures on these PCs at the cafe. So I just
keep taking them and will have them posted to the website when we get
back into Bejing. I doubt we will get a PC w/ internet till then.
I am really enjoying the trip and amazed at what is going on here. So much to absorb.
PS another classmate sitting next to me who lives in Truckee said it snowed there. Early summer weather - can't predict. I hope it did not frost and freeze any plant is Yreka.
